The at Home Law Office
Working from home can be a great benefit for lawyers in both small and large firms.
With gas prices so high saving yourself the commute to the office is nearly benefit enough, and attorneys who work in busy metropolitan areas would gladly skip the expense and hassle of parking.
While working at home has many perks it is extremely important to maintain some basic rules:
- Dress Appropriately: You don't have to wear a suit, but you should dress as if a client may walk into your office at any minute (see below).
- Keep Consistent Hours: Even if you don't meet clients you need to set your work hours and stick to them. It will help you stay on task and create a more professional atmosphere.
- Meeting Clients: Unless your home office includes a separate entrance and bathroom for clients. You should plan to meet clients elsewhere. Many corporate centers and professional suites offer affordable room rentals that only charge on a per use basis.
- Keep it Down: If you do meet clients in your at home office make sure to sound proof the room to avoid the intrusion of outside noises such as kids playing and weed whackers.
- The Great Divide: Keep your office and your home separate. Do not use your home for business and don't use your office for personal activities. They may be under the same roof, but that doesn't mean they should be used for the same things.
- Don't Get Trapped: Be sure to get out of the house/office at least once a week. Take some work to the local law library or coffee shop.
